A.1. FLV Fund invests in Transparent Language

FLV Fund, based in Belgium, announced that it invested $3,000,000 in Transparent Language for a stake of 8.54%. Transparent Language develops and markets language learning software, foreign language reference and automatic translation products. The funds will be used for sales force expansion, accelerated development of Internet and enterprise products, infrastructure development and increased investment in e-commerce.

A.2. World Talk Arabic released

EuroTalk announced the release of World Talk Arabic, which will take language learners who are already familiar with the Arabic language up to intermediate levels. The user can select from nine topics to improve language skills. World Talk also includes a recording facility, a dictation section and a TV-style quiz to put your skills to the test. The World Talk series is designed as a follow-up to the Talk Now! series for beginners. World Talk is available in 15 languages with more to come.

A.3. Learning Company releases QUICKSTUDY

The Learning Company announced the release of QUICKSTUDY, a language software line designed to provide a fast way to speak Spanish, French, German and Italian. The software incorporates the engine and content from The Learning Company's For Everyone language series. Providing users with feedback on their progress in comprehension and pronunciation, QUICKSTUDY uses an on-screen tutor, interactive conversations with onscreen characters and conversation branching, advanced speech recognition, a talking dictionary and a grammar guidebook.

B.1. Tegic raises capital; announces agreement with NEC

Tegic Communications announced it has raised $10 million in private capital from Oak Investment Partners, Voyager Capital, Northwest Venture Associates, Fluke Venture Capital and Kirlan Venture Capital. The capital will be used to accelerate Tegic's new product development programs, as well as support its expanded worldwide sales and marketing activities.

Tegic also announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with NEC Corporation. NEC has introduced a new GSM handset, the DB2100, in China. The DB2100 handset incorporates the Chinese language version of T9 Text Input.

C.1. L&H releases Speech Pen Keyboard

Lernout & Hauspie has released a PC-based Mandarin and Cantonese continuous speech recognition product. The new product, called Speech Pen Keyboard (SPK), enables users to enter Chinese text by speaking continuously or naturally into a microphone. The system also enables users to switch to a handwriting recognition system using a graphics tablet. SPK converts speech into Traditional or Simplified Chinese characters. SPK runs on any PC with Windows 95/98 in Traditional or Simplified Chinese or any English Windows running a Chinese overlay system such TwinBridge or Chinese Star. C.2. SpeechWorks goes European

SpeechWorks International, a provider of conversational speech recognition technology and products for over-the telephone solutions, announced the opening of its new European office, located in Staines, UK. Its Rapid Prototyping Center, also located in Staines, provides business development solution services and product support, allowing customers to validate how speech technology can be used in their organizations. SpeechWorks has also teamed up with CS Communications & Systems to develop high-end French-language speech recognition systems.

"With our strong presence in the US, Singapore, Mexico and now Europe," said Steve Adams, SpeechWorks' vice president, international, "we are advancing our international leadership while developing cutting-edge speech systems that can communicate with callers in different languages."

SpeechWorks also announced that it has received an investment from the Intel 64 Fund. "The investment capital will be used to help expand our marketing, international and R&D efforts, including our IA-64 porting work," said Richard Westelman, SpeechWorks' CFO.

E.2. eTranslate announces Web site

San Francisco-based eTranslate, founded in the fourth quarter of 1998, announced the launch of its Web site, http://www.etranslate.com, offering translation solutions for Web sites, corporate communications and professional documents into any language through the Internet. The service uses a network of over 6,000 language professionals in more than 80 countries. eTranslate offers three core services: GlobalWeb, for simultaneous worldwide translation and delivery of Web sites in any language; Express, for turnaround within 72 hours; and Project for translation into a variety of formats, including graphics and charts.

E.3. Transparent Language launches FreeTranslation.com

Transparent Language, Inc. announced the launch of FreeTranslation.com, a free Web site designed to translate text and foreign language Web pages from English to Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese, as well as to English from Spanish, French and German.

FreeTranslation.com uses the TranscendRT natural language translation engine. The software allows users to obtain the gist of foreign language text by typing or pasting text directly into a translation box, selecting a language to translate the text into from the pull-down menu and then clicking the "translate" button. Web pages are translated by typing or pasting the URL of the Web page to be translated into the Web page translation box.

E.4. Berlitz acquires LMI subsidiaries

Berlitz International Inc. announced the acquisition of certain assets, operating subsidiaries and key personnel of Language Management International, Inc. (LMI) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Rosario, Argentina; and Singapore. The acquisition also includes the North American sales organization of LMI, Inc. LMI's operations in Amsterdam and its corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado, were not acquired. The Localisation Industry Software Association has announced the availability of version 2 of the LISA QA Model. It offers a standardized quality assurance model for product localization that covers everything from documentation, Help and software through packaging and CBT tutorials. Produced by the LISA Quality Special Interest Group under the chairmanship of localization service provider L&L Informatie, version 2 contains revised quality assurance templates for Latin languages, quality assurance templates for Asian languages, case studies and client requirements, a reference manual for project management and the QA process and the previous Version 1 templates and documentation. H.1. Lancaster University survey

The Department of Linguistics at Lancaster University is currently engaged in work aimed at establishing the needs of the language engineers and linguists with regard to corpus building in non-indigenous minority languages in Europe (for example, Chinese, Vietnamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Panjabi, Urdu). It has developed a short Web questionnaire to assess such needs. The answers will be made anonymous and form part of a report which it will send, free of charge, to all who participate in the survey. Even those who are not working with these languages are invited to fill in the questionnaire with an eye to future possible work in this area.
