A.1. Transparent Language reports 76% increase

Transparent Language announced a 76% increase in year-over-year sales of language learning software at retail for April. According to statistics compiled and published by PC Data, Transparent Language was ranked the fifth largest educational software publisher for April, even though the company publishes products in only one of the 25 educational subcategories tracked (foreign language). Transparent Language also ranked number two in language learning software revenue, according to PC Data.

Scala Business Solutions announced that its integrated e-commerce product was recently named the "Best E-Commerce Enabling Application" at the Internet and Electronic Commerce Expo. Scala.Solutions offers multilingual and multicurrency capabilities. The system supports over 30 different languages and allows dynamic changes between languages. B.2. WebBudget version 2.1 released

Aquino Software announced the download availability of version 2.1 of WebBudget, a budgeting/billing tool that locates, classifies and counts all translatable text in an Internet file. Some of the new features of version 2.1 include faster processing; all "input" tags are grouped under the "Buttons" section; translatable strings now extend to "msgbox, "alert," "confirm" and "prompt" with several syntax variances; the SmartCount algorithm has been refined to improve general performance; and there is a new Export to MSExcel feature.

IntraACTIVE, Inc., a Web collaboration and community-building software company, announced the beta version of http://www.bantu.com. A free multilingual e-mail, Personal Information Manager and Group Information Manager on the Web, bantu.com lets members organize their personal information and share it with their group members. Included are e-mail, calendar, address book, instant messaging, chat and postings. Currently, bantu.com supports French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and English, with more languages to come.

C.1. Two-way MIF filter added to Dialect

Uniscape announced the release of a two-way multilingual Adobe FrameMaker (MIF) filter for its Dialect solution. Dialect is Uniscape's multilingual content management solution that automates the translation process for Web sites, documentation and software. Dialect has a scalable translation memory that can capture, store and reuse earlier translations and an automated workflow that routes files from content producers to translators and reviewers. The new Dialect filtering technology enables users to automate the extraction of content requiring translation from a FrameMaker file and then automatically reassemble the file after translation without loss of formatting fidelity. In addition to the FrameMaker's MIF file format, Dialect also supports two-way filtering for .HTML, .RTF, .TXT, .RC and .MSG.

Accent Software International announced that over 1000 new accounts have been generated through their new translation solution site, LanguageWare.net. Once visitors register for an account at the site, they have access to language translation quotes as well as the use of the conversational-quality automatic translation tool for instant translation of English to/from French, Italian, German or Spanish. "Entire corporate Web sites can be translated via LanguageWare.net. The continuing maintenance of that Web site can then be handled through LanguageWare.net on a near real-time basis, allowing customers to have an international Web site as up-to-date as their original, natural language site," said Bab Antoniazzi, vice president of marketing.

E.1. Accent reports first quarter improvement

Accent Software International announced that its first quarter revenue was $471,000, showing an 8% improvement over the previous quarter. The company also reported that its net income was $662,000, due to a one time extraordinary gain from converting a loan into equity in the first quarter, compared to a net loss of $1,841,000 in the first quarter of 1998. The net loss before the extraordinary gain improved to $455,000. "By utilizing the Internet to further increase access to our language information technology products and services, the trend toward profitability continues," says Todd Oseth, Accent's president and CEO.

Uniscape announced that it provided internationalization for Lycos' MailCity and then localized it for the Japanese market. MailCity, a free Web-based e-mail service, is part of a wide range of services that Lycos is making available for Japanese-speaking users. To speed the internationalization process, Uniscape integrates its own Global C run-time library into a client's software application, reducing the time required to make the application Unicode compliant. Once internationalized, the software can be rapidly localized for a specific target language and locale.
