A.1. LanguageNow! version 7.0 released

Transparent Language has added more languages with its latest 7.0 release of the LanguageNow! family of language education CD-ROMs for Windows and Macintosh systems. Arabic, Polish and Irish Gaelic are the newest languages in the series, in addition to Spanish, French, German, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, classical Latin, Swedish, Dutch and English for Spanish speakers.

New features in LanguageNow! version 7.0 include a new audio/video unscramble feature that allows users to hear or view foreign language dialogs, scramble and then re-sequence them. Another new feature allows users to track their progress for scorable activities and compete against themselves or another user. Additionally there's more conversation practice with record/compare, pictures and video in conversation practice and a new navigational interface.

Justsystem Corporation announced the forthcoming release of a cross-platform Japanese word processor, provisionally named Ichitaro Ark for Java. The standard document formats of Ichitaro Ark are XML and HTML. Ichitaro Ark's document managing ability allows users to work with documents created by other word processors. The small program size of Ichitaro Ark (one megabyte) allows users to download the newest version every time needed.

B.2. TX Text Control Version 6.0 adds Unicode support

Griffin Technologies, LLC, a provider of software components and copy protection systems for software developers, and DBS GmbH, a provider of text and image processing software, announced the release of version 6.0 of their text processing component, TX Text Control. The new release adds Unicode support for non-European character sets. TX Text Control includes built-in support for English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese. The addition of Unicode support combined with a new external resource file allows developers to localize their application in any language. Version 6 also includes improvements to the system's database and table features and a new filter for sharing documents with Microsoft Word.

C.1. Star+Globe releases WinMASS 2000

Star+Globe has announced WinMASS 2000, its latest multilanguage enabling system for the English Windows environment. WinMASS 2000 users can read, create, edit and print multilingual documents in Asian and European languages using Windows-based applications or desktop tools. Software developers can enable their programs with multilingual capabilities by integrating the Unicode routines, WinMASS environment routines and code conversion routines.

Because WinMASS 2000 is designed and built on Unicode it can support other Unicode-enabled applications. WinMASS 2000 users are able to display, input and print documents in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tamil and European languages. A variety of input methods are incorporated. WinMASS 2000 also features a 60,000-term Chinese-English dictionary; Smart Learning, which lists the most commonly used words first; Lingual Association, which allows users to find common phrases related to a character and add new phrases to the phrase database; and a code conversion feature that enables a text file to be converted from one encoding scheme to another.

C.2. FontWorld to supply Hebrew fonts for PageMaker

FontWorld has signed a licensing agreement with Winsoft of Grenoble, France, for bundling 25 Hebrew typefaces with the Middle East version of Adobe PageMaker version 6.5. Samples of these 25 fonts can be viewed at FontWorld's Web site. The fonts include both popular old designs, different weights, and many new designs.

C.3. Microsoft Windows 98 Arabic Edition available

Microsoft Windows 98 Arabic Edition has been released in two separate versions -- enabled and localized. In the enabled version the user interface is completely in English, including the Help screens, menus and dialog boxes. In the localized version, the user interface is completely in Arabic.

Translation and localization provider ALPNET announced the signing of a strategic alliance agreement with S?rman Information to jointly market and provide industrial information services. F.2. LOGOS Group offers Web-based and client-server translation tool

The LOGOS Group based in Modena, Italy, has announced their newly developed translation database tool, LOGOS Mnem?. Information and tools are available to clients, translators and technical writers via Internet or intranet. The client-server architecture enables several users to connect and share the same database. Mnem? operates in a UNIX (Solaris) environment using an Oracle database to increase management capability. The software allows data to be stored, organized according to context (word in phrase, in sentence, in paragraph), connected to semantic fields (terminology application domains) and linked to a specific customer through the creation of company glossaries. Mnem? is linked to Logosys management tools, the multilingual dictionary Wordtheque and the segmentation and analysis engine. Data stored can be exported and placed at the disposal of the customer.

The next step will be to make pretranslated material available via FTP. In this way, companies can send documents for translation direct to the LOGOS database, receive a pretranslation, and then translate new and/or updated material using their own resources or those of LOGOS.

F.3. TRADOS opens Beijing office

TRADOS announced the opening of a new office in Beijing, China. TRADOS China is the second TRADOS operation in Asia, following TRADOS Japan which opened in February 1998. The new operation, a full-service field office, will market and support all TRADOS products, serving the Peoples Republic of China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong. In addition to support and marketing, TRADOS China will also provide internal services, such as product testing and specialized feature development. Jared Spataro, the general manager of TRADOS China, speaks Mandarin and has software development experience as well as experience working for both Taiwanese and mainland Chinese companies.

F.4. ITP sells ReSET to Translation Craft

International Translation & Publishing Ltd. (ITP) has announced the sale of its ReSET technology to Translation Craft Ltd, developer of HelpQA and HtmlQA. ReSET, renamed LocSmith by Translation Craft, was developed by ITP to deal with the most common engineering issues in resource code-based software translation and contains a stable resource script parser. In addition to word counting, pseudo-translation, protected editing and glossary generation features, ReSET also includes fuzzy multi-source update and leverage, comprehensive quality assurance as well as treatment of conditional compilation directives within resource scripts. "Our development schedule for the next six months," said Robin Hilliard, managing director of Translation Craft, "will see it evolve from an excellent in-house engineering tool into an advanced and comprehensive software localization environment."

G. Localization Tools

G.1. OneRealm releases tools to automate internationalization

OneRealm, Inc., a developer of software internationalization tools, launched I18n Expeditor and I18n Reporter. I18n Expeditor is a source code analysis tool that detects internationalization problems such as hard-coded text, character literals and locale specific functions. It can automatically perform many corrections and update all the necessary resource and header files or provide recommendations to resolve problems. Additionally it provides statistics for assessing the quality of code and progress toward readiness.

I18n Reporter assesses source code during the software build process. This command line assessment tool is incorporated into scripts or batch processes to find and mark internationalization violations. Summary reports detail the location and type of error, which can be corrected quickly using I18n Expeditor.

C/C++ versions of both products are shipping now. Java versions will be available later in the first quarter of 1999.

Uniscape announced that it has been selected by BMC Software, Inc., to provide enabling technology for the internationalization of the company's Application Service Assurance (ASA) software. Global C is a multilingual, multiplatform run-time library for PC, UNIX and mainframe platforms. Applications written using Global C are localized by changing data files, and do not require modification to program code.

H.1. Bowne awarded three-year Microsoft contract; acquires Mapora

Bowne Global Solutions announced a three-year contract to create editorial content, localize software and prepare local adaptations of multimedia and Internet products for the Interactive Media Group of Microsoft Corporation. The contract includes development for Microsoft Network as well as a number of continuing projects such as Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia, World Atlas, Bookshelf and Money. It includes projects in Chinese, international English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and other languages.

In a related event, Bowne & Co. Inc., parent of Bowne Global Solutions, acquired Mapora Books S.L., a publishing house based in Madrid, Spain. Mapora Books has worked closely with Bowne Global Solutions for three years, creating Spanish and Portuguese versions of the Encarta Encyclopedia, World Atlas and Bookshelf. As part of the acquisition, Ramiro Sanchez, managing director of Mapora, was named director of the Editorial Council of Bowne Global Solutions.
